Cost to Start Online Community Site?
Hi.I'm a brand manager for an automobile accessories company in India. We are planning to launch a community site related with automobile accessories and more. Can any one help me out how to approach. How much it will cost. I am in India now. If you have a better Idea then you may mail it to me in the following mail id: pratapk21@gmail.com, pratap.pattanayak@gmail.com. If any of you has previous knowledge in building a community site, I will be happy to meet them.
Cost to Start Online Community Site?
If you are willing to work at it, you could do this for free (excluding the cost of working hours and possibly a domain name, but neither of those are essential).
I do not have time to expand fully on this right now, but there are lots of good (free) web hosting packages around on the web.
Unless you want to spend money on a website designer etc or would like to program the site from scatch, the next step would be to look at some form of a Content Management System (CMS) -- take a look around the search engines for one that you like.
The majority of these are aimed at blogs (web-logs), but there are many different templates around so don't give up straight away.
The rest is up to you ...

There are scores of different computer programming languages out there on scores of different computer platforms being used in scores of different applications in scores of industries (you do the math for the different combinations)
Each combination has one or more on-line discussion group for people involved there. You need to narrow your focus from "this topic in general" to something specific, such as
Computer Language = COBOL
Data Base platform = ORACLE
Industry = Frozen Foods for Restaurants
Application = e-commerce
Then, when you have specified what it is you know, or want to get better at, then you can focus in on the relevant discussion lists

I am currently starting a website to promote a town in Upstate New York. Here is the idea, the question is.. Would this influence you?
The idea:
10% of all profits from advertising, donations, and fund raisers done by the website would go to a collection that at the end of the year would grow into a substantial amount of money. From there, everyone who donated in some way will get to vote on what type of civic-minded project the money will go to to restore the Village and add new community things.
Would this influence your decision to advertise with the website in a positive way?

Does online community boards do really serve the community?
i have read some community boards. boards of different interest and hobbies.
but when the discussions are getting critical, and in my opinion, i read people's ideas and saying a good points, the boards are trying to stop the discussion even if it matters are someones elses important concerns. sometime even life or death.
based on what i am seeing, some other boards are just hang outs and not really helpful.

Take for examples Yahoo Answers Philippines (YAP), there's only one person that ruined the community this guy named "WELL" he got 4 or 5 clones just to earned points.
From that point of view the essence of serving the community board is gone.
