personally i really like facebook. myspace is much too time consuming to maintain what with all the html coding and crap like that. facebook is user friendly, easy to set up, and it has lots of interesting applications you can add, like sending free gifts to people and drawing them pictures on the computer. on top of this, the privacy settings are SO much better than most sites. you can choose exactly what you want to hide or allow to be viewed. so rather than hiding your entire profile, you can pick which bits and pieces of it are seen by others.

Has anyone heard of an online community game called 'myworld' or 'myplace' or something?

This is apparently an online community where people can create themselves as a character then build houses, business and stuff and then sell their houses and businesses to other community members for real money. There have been a couple of people who have been made millionaires from it.

If you have heard of it can you post a link to the site please?

Only asking as it came up in chat at uni today and I couldn't find anything about it in the search engines!

Has anyone heard of an online community game called 'myworld' or 'myplace' or something?
had been told by a friend but had forgoten all about it till you mentioned..You made me really curious, so I went and found it here

http://secondlife.com/whatis.php

they do claim you can make real money out of it but I'd be very careful.... there's no such thing as easy money
Reply:All are scams only. I was struggling with same issue some days back. Now, I know atleast one site that is genuine and would like to help you out. I've earned from it. BELIEVE ME... All other sites are fake/SCAMS. I am a part time worker doing work online at home based in Ahmedabad-India, so I can share my personal experience with you.

When u are planning for a home based online work, be very careful because most of them are scam and ask you to pay initial money. never pay money to any such site. I would like to share a link where you can make $400 easily (Approx Rs. 20,000) in a month working at home just by working 2-3 hours a day. You will be paid via PayPal. The work need to be done is posting a discussion and answering a discussion. The better you do it, the more you can earn. The link is:

http://www.mylot.com/?ref=findcutegj

Simply click the link above and click on "Sign Up" and start EARNING!!! Don't wait because oppurtunity comes once in a lifetime.
Reply:Do you mean http://secondlife.com/ ? I heard about this on the breakfast news the other day for the first time, and I think it's what you're looking for. I'm not sure if you can make real money though. They trade in their own currency and in dollars, as well as having real businesses there etc, but I don't think you can make real money.
Reply:there id one called myspace but you don't sell houses and all that but you can post pictures and you can have a song that you pick play whenever somebody goes on your page.
Reply:i heard about this on the news about a month ago. I think it was called myworld. its kinda a scam. u have to pay REAL MONEY for virtual clothes, houses, items, i think u even have to pay virtual bills!! u would have to have a lot of extra money to waste to play. people can earn money, but u have to know how to create virtual items. u need computer programming backround and even with that, its still a slim chance ull break even/profit after paying money to participate in the game.

i think the story was on dateline NBC, check their website

Are Online Universities any good? Are Community Colleges any good too?

Whats more accredited? online? community? regular college or university?

Are Online Universities any good? Are Community Colleges any good too?
The easy answer is: No.

The more developed answer is: they can be. If you want to get your degree online, your best bet is to find out what traditional, accredited colleges in your area have online degree programs. Find out whether your degree will be stamped, "online program," or not since employers are (rightly so) suspicious of anyone getting a degree online. There are many diploma mills such as the University of Phoenix, which are not, in fact, quality educational institutions.

If you're looking to save money, going to school online usually costs MORE money than going to a traditional school, so I'd recommend comparing costs carefully.

In Wisconsin, we have programs via the University of Wisconsin system, and the University of Platteville, for example, has a complete online degree program that is offered in either online or correspondence course-based format (the latter does not require as strict of a timeline since you are not "in class" with students online). It does not stamp your degree as being "online." The University of Wisconsin also offers a two-year degree program online, but it is stamped as "online." If you think you want to get your general studies courses out of the way and will do your last 2-3 years at a traditional university, this degree being stamped "online" may not matter much.

Check with your state or the surrounding states and see what options you might have. Many of the traditional universities and even many private colleges (which have been accredited forever and are constantly undergoing review) will offer you an online program (or online courses to supplement a traditional program) and they will be a legitimate degree that is not a "diploma mill."

Compare your costs. Find out how much it costs to do the program in different kinds of schools. Community colleges, if you have any where you live, are often a great way to get the "general studies" courses out of the way at a smaller, more supportive environment, and many tech schools now offer an associates degree program that transfers to a traditional college (with those general studies courses out of the way). Tech colleges are often cheaper, too! You might find an online program is cheaper, or you might be better off in traditional face-to-face classes (we're used to learning that way and many cannot learn effectively in an online format).

Figure out first what you think you want to study, then do the work of comparing programs (luckily almost everything is online now). Most schools will offer you financial aid as a full-time student, whether or not the school is online, but your safest bet is to make sure your online program is backed by a traditional university that has real buildings and real professors (not all part-time teachers).

Good luck!
Reply:No its best to go to a 4 year college

How can I make sure an online community election isn't fraud?

Okay so this is a gamers community for an online game and we are trying to elect a mayor. Last time the election was frauded by cheating. We use SMF forums and I know that's pretty vurnerible so is their any good way to make sure an election in an online community is NOT frauded?

How can I make sure an online community election isn't fraud?
Nothing can be stopped. But you can make it harder.

If someone with their own server or webpage can host it then it will help. Anyone who has direct access to the systems logs. I can turn on logging features which record a ton of info from each connection. Comparing those entries can usually point out obvious efforts at cheating. Even if people use proxies and different IPs you can usually see similarities that stand out.

i need a cheap online school, where i can get a degree for under $70 per credit hour, community colleges are fine.

Need a cheap online community college degree for under $70 per credit hour?
You likely will not find one. Unfortunately community colleges are funded by the state and have attendance districts. Therefore, online courses would cost you nearly double if you do not live in that college's district. Most of the online universities I have found are all outrageous.

How to design "for" a teacher education online community?
Obviously, your design must be computer-oriented since the community will be interacting "on-line."

Moreover, the design must incorporate valid on-line strategies such as: Chats, Message Threads, Response Requirements, Postings, Attachments, and more on-line research.

Starting online supportive diet community?

Will be making a site, with bulletins, you can post and chat to others, links about food calories, activity burning, and online community meetings, it will be really fun, if you think it would be a good idea leave a comment

Starting online supportive diet community?
It just depends on who joins. I started a support group:

Wearethebiggestloser-subscribe @yahoogroups.com

feel free to join if you like...

We also have people that are involved in a contest. It is where each person pays $2 per week and the "biggest loser" for the week gets the total amount(10 players $20 award) and I let them post anything they want ...support, diet info, recipes, ...but we are in our 7th week and it seems that they just gave up. I even hightlight a specific diet each week since no one diet really works for everyone. Good luck...I hope it works for you.

Currently building an online community. Should I go PHP or Java Route.?

PHP has obviously made a lot of head-way as a technology platform used to build online communities. Sites like wikipedia, ning.com use PHP heavilly. PHP based Drupal CMS has become popular across the world. I could not find a Java anolog for it. While i have extensive java skills, i am wondering if I should go the PHP route to save cost and time in the future, esp. when I can find pre-built PHP plug-ins for several community oriented modules.

Currently building an online community. Should I go PHP or Java Route.?
I would go the PHP route too. It is well tested, popular and most of all server-side. Server-side is always a plus, because you will be turning people away from the site that don't have Java installed or don't want to install something just to be on a site.
Reply:PHP is great for online communities - it was built for use on webservers, and it does its job very well. Of course, there is nothing stopping you having java components as well!
Reply:PHP the future?? I heard Java was the past and PHP was following into the same path.

Get all that done with Ruby or C#/ASP.Net

Be a man for a change.

Joe.
Reply:PHP, I say. You might as well learn the future instead of passing by in the past. See what I mean?
Reply:well it really depends on what you think but PHP would be better in the long run for all the resons you listed sure you might have to learn some new things but big sites do use them. On the other hand there is java but how far do you think they will go? Its your choice.

Online PC Gaming Community?

Basically, I’m a hardcore PC Gamer, have been for years, and find it really difficult to find a good online community for PC Gaming.

One where you can make friends, start clans, play in leagues, tournaments and win prizes etc…

So I’ve started to build a website/forum, which will enable gamers from all over the globe to connect with each other and form a base for PC Gaming.

The site is called: www.FRAGTASTIC.org and my questions are:

-How is the best way to advertise www.FRAGTASTIC.org

-Where can I advertise for Admins/Moderators for www.FRAGTASTIC.org

Thanks in advance ! :)

Advice Needed to Grow Online Community on Successful Project Management?

I am trying very hard over the last few months to build up this online community for Successful Project Management ( http://www.managesuccessfulprojects.com ). It is not growing as fast as I would like it to grow, but I know that it will take time.

Anybody has experienced doing this before, or has good ideas how I could speed up its growth will be highly appreciated. I am also sincerely inviting all those with interest to explore project management as a topic to register and join the community and help me grow the community as well.

Advice Needed to Grow Online Community on Successful Project Management?
I looked at your site. It looks like it may be useful. Not sure. But if you would let a potential user browse at least the member area without having to register first, that may help. There are so many of these types of sites now that I think some people (me included) are hesitant to just register for yet one more potential source of junkmail. Good Luck!

One last comment, the site looks a little junky with all those ads. That would also lead me to believe that if I registered, I would bombarded with junk mail. Just my observations and thoughts!

Writing.com is awesome. You can post literally anything you want, and you are guaranteed to get feedback on your work. Basic memberships are free. You can also read lots of stories and poems written by others. The community is friendly and helpful. Egypt online community?

Hey everyone;

I'm not sure if anyone will actually reach this question but any feedback would be great.

I'm an Egyptian American %26amp; now moved to Egypt to work.

I'm about to design a new website %26amp; hope to build the biggest online community Egypt has ever known. At least that's what I hope :)

Having seen the success of myspace, I hope to make a similar success but I don't plan to copy it. Of course I can gain from good ideas from here %26amp; there but since I plan to build this website based on "What people want" my question is %26amp; I hope the young people would help me through this;

What do you think would be the best features to include in this new website beside networking %26amp; profiels etc. that would make it different from any other site %26amp; would draw more people to it???

Let me know what you think ;)

Mazzy

Egypt online community?
Probably not what you want to hear, but.....

Have age specific groupings (under 10, 10 - 12 preteen, 13 - 15 young teen, 16 - 18 young adult, over 18 adult.)

Make everyone register with a credit card and a nominal fee (maybe 3 Egyptian pounds - about 50 cents U.S.) I think this might help cut down on predators (dirty old men posing as young girls, etc.) and would also get parents involved in what their children are doing.

It's going to be difficult to NOT copy the best of MySpace, Orkut, Friendster, etc. I mean, you're not planning on using the WORST of these sites, are you? :-) So use their best ideas, throw out the worst, and incorporate things that would appeal to the culture and ethnicity of the Egyptian people and maybe even people in surrounding countries. A little ethnic diversity and "koom bay ya" hugging and hand holding never hurt!

I believe YahooGroups (http://www.yahoogroups.com) is still the best place to find an online community that matches your interests, particularly if you don't just want to chat with strangers but, rather, you want to find offline activities to do, you want to learn about a particular topic or issue, you want to meet people who are sincerely interested in the same things you are.

Also, online communities are often web-based, so use Google to find groups you might be interested in. For instance, you can type in:

women hikers Kentucky

And you might find a group that hosts its own online community on its web site.

If you are just looking to chat with strangers, then you could try Facebook, tribe.net, friendster.com, orkut.com

Online community: linux or windows?
You should use windoze because you don't know enough about Linux to know why Linux would be a better choice.

Online community colleges that of good computer science classes?

I need to take several foundation cs classes before I can start the MS program in CS. I have an engineering degree. I could take the foundation classes at the university but it is too expensive. Does anyone know of any good community colleges that offer CS classes online? Thanks

Online community colleges that of good computer science classes?
Here is a website for US colleges: http://www.utexas.edu/world/univ

Please stay away from those online, for-profit schools such as university of phoenix and strayer u. Former students of u of phoenix started this site: http://www.uopsucks.com

Question regarding online community?

Hi there, I have a domain that I don't know what should I do to it.

I have a dream that this will be a community website for programmer and designer where they can share the achievement that they have, eg : showing a design work, show a program / website, where there will be a screen shot, video demo, etc. There will be a forum too, and a place to post his/her portfolio/CV. But, I'm not sure if it's acceptable in internet community, because I know that web developer should have a website already, or web designer have a portfolio too that available online.

That's why I asking here, is it will be acceptable by internet community? or it will just be a dead project?

thank's for your help.

Question regarding online community?
An established, reliable, open-source content management system would be a good start. I highly recommend Drupal. Joomla or Typo3 being some good alternatives.

As to "acceptability"... it's true that web designers should have their own websites. Instead, the type of site you're talking about might be more like... well... Yahoo Answers, except perhaps restricted to web-only design topics. Then a web surfer aka prospective client could get an overview of a person's knowledge by seeing how they've answered previous questions (and perhaps a rating/voting system, which Drupal has available too).
Reply:Ok.... No one is going to answer because you are using big words. The "internet community" does not care to read anything over four sentences that uses words like that. I have no idea what a CV is. Sorry, better luck next time for you!
Reply:well i think that it will be excepted by the internet community!!:]

Online community scripts to built a website?
May be you can contact a web designer.

You can find many web designers at websites like http://getafreelnacer.com/ , you can just post your project at the website and let many web designers bid for your project.

You can hire whoever you like.

Do not pay any money afront however.

PS3 Online community?

Hello, i have some questions about the online community for the PS3. I went on the Playstation website under PS3 and looked at the Playstation 3 Network. I only saw a little bit of it, but to me it kind of looked something like Xbox LIVE. My friend just bought Xbox LIVE for his X360 and it looks pretty cool with the gaming community and the chatting and everything. My first question is- Is the Playstation 3 Network simular to XLIVE? Do you get to like add friends and chat with them and stuff while your ingame? And in the PSNETWORK is there like a lobby like xlive with chat rooms and the ppl online and a list of the games theyre playing? And finally, are there like Bluetooth headsets to use with ps3 like they have for x360 Live? If so how do they work?

PS3 Online community?
It's kind of similar to Xbox Live..

You can add friends and "Voice Chat" or send messages to them, but not during a game.

And, Sony is working a avatar-chat for the PS3 called "Home" which will be released this spring, it's like a lobby you can move around and customize your own avatar and, chat with new people and stuff. It also has a Playstation Store, so you could download, demo's, game trailers, ps3 themes and more.. You can also buy some stuff from there too.

For the bluetooth headsets, well.. It doesn't come with the PS3, you need to buy it seperately, any bluetooth set will work. You just scan it on your ps3 and when it locates it, click "Register".
Reply:Well, I don't have a PS3 (plz no thumbs down), but I can give you some answers though by some research I do. Okay, Playstation Home is gonna be HUGE! Here's a vid for it, see if your interested: http://youtube.com/watch?v=8ZY2vwlh5-g

I think its coming out this spring. And yes, you can use a headset. If your asking how to set it up, here you go: http://reviews.cnet.com/4660-10165_7-667... skip to 1:07 to see it but the video gives great other tips as well. You talk to your friends or bother your opponents using it.

Hope I helped.
Reply:To be honest, the PlayStation Network (PSN) is not nearly as good as Xbox Live (XBL). There is no way of contacting your friends while you're playing a game. You can add friends, if you know their display name, which is the equivalent to a XBL Gamertag. As of today, there is no lobby where you can "socialize" with other people. Unles you're in a game like FIFA 08or something like that. Hpwever I recomend looking up "Home" or PS Home. It is scheduled to come out sometime this year and would be like a giant lobby... but look it up, it is really interensting.

If you ask me the online community is not one of the strong points of the PS, by far XBL is way, way better.
Reply:Well the PS3 Network is a work in progress, there is no lobby, you can add friends but you can only send mail to them. And you can only talk ingame via a headset. I use my bluetooth headset that i bought for my cell phone. Its a motorla h550. The PS3 network is going to being update to look kinda of the sims. You will get your own house that you can get furnitre for. You can go out and socialize with other people in different areas. I forget what its called. They running a closed beta in the us right now if im not mistaken. I think its supposed to come out this year. It was awhile ago when i read about it. So the xbox360 is currently better, but sonys looks freaking awesome i can't wait til it comes out.
Reply:that sucks
Reply:1.u can add friends and chat wiv dem but as of yet not in-game

2.no lobbies yet but u can c wot ur friends r playing and join them if u hav da same game eg.burnout paradise

3.yes there r headsets but i find dem really anoying 2 listen 2

ps3 is much better than the 360 - just thought i'd mention it...lets not 4get playstation home - out 2008(god knows when it was ment 2 come out last october just like gta iv)

cya:)
Reply:PSN is under construction. It will work to it's top notch after the release of Playstation Home project. (Much like Second Life, but free).

Does online community service count? like online counselor or online newspaper editor....?

Does online community service count on college applications? I'm talking about being a TeenCentral.net counselor or an online newspaper editor... something like that

Does online community service count? like online counselor or online newspaper editor....?
Any community service involvement should count! Be sure to explain your commitment in detail.
Reply:If you truthfully think it should, because you think it was a service and a sacrifice and really helped somebody, you can list it. Colleges want credible sources and lots of hours of it.
Reply:Yes, it should count, but might be difficult to prove. Find some way of recording your efforts in case questions are raised about your service.
Reply:Ask whoever you are doing it for.
Reply:Yes, these type of services count. You done it. Make sure that you have copies of your editing work, and put the internet address down so your future employer can look it up if they want to do so. Every experience that involves community service helps.
Reply:no
Reply:no, and if you tried it again, it won't work! HAHAHA

Best Online Community?

Is there an online community that is NOT full of teenie bopers and old men that look like sexual predators?!?!

I have MySpace and I wish to leave it. Very boring and is now full of people who want to hack your account to spam everyone.

I have a VERY FULL life, and I do have a life outside of the internet. I enjoy the online community especially when I have to do boring chores like laundry, or when I am ill and not able to sleep. So if you dislike the fact I spend SOME of my spare time in one go shove it and keep your immature comments to yourself. Respect me and I will respect you in return!

I only want GOOD referals for online communities, from nice mature and relaxed people.

Reply:VEOH is a pretty good online video community. It is similar to YouTube or the late Stage6 website, but it seems to have a MySpace feel tied into it.
