Afraid to join online community?

I'm afraid to join myspace, myyearbook of facebook ,because lots of ppl in my school are there and I don't get along with them. Plus, it is kind of embarrasing for me if they come upon my profile and see that I have no friends, making me look desperate...I know it sounds stupid....what should I do then?

Afraid to join online community?
on facebook you can set your privacy settings so that no one, not even your friends, can see your other friends or your wall. If you hide your wall, no one will be able to post on it, so it will stay empty, but if you're embarrassed it might help at least until you get some friends :)

Good luck!
Reply:Don't feel afraid. Make it easy. Join ORKUT. It is the best. Take ambigous nickname.
Reply:if thats how u feel, then there's nothing you can do. A time will come though when you'll realize that it really doesnt matter what other people think of you. just put yourself out there, and if no one likes you for who you are...tough. they're the ones missing out. You shouldnt join one of these until your comfortable with who you are. hope that helps

take care
Reply:Don't be ^_^ If you're too embarrassed to join but still interested, you can try use a nickname first and then when you're comfy enough, reveal yourself little by little. It takes time to enjoy the stuff. If you want to join an online community with a difference, try sign up an account on www.gaiaonline.com.
Reply:just set your profile to private so it can only be seen by people who you accept as your friends!! you can do that on both myspace and facebook now.

and its not about how many friends you have. people who treat those sites like a stupid popularity contest are losers and probably dont even have one real close friend, just a bunch of aquaintances to make them feel 'cooler' And that just makes THEM look desperate..
Reply:You don't have to join anything, if it makes you uncomfortable. If you wanted, you could make a myspace page and set it as private, so that only the people you wanted to see it could. You could also make a really awesome page and then the people from your school would start wanting to know how you did it.

Don't worry about not getting along with people at school. Kids are very judgemental and scared of anyone who's smarter or a little different than they are. When you're in school, you're judged by what you look like and how much you act like your classmates. When you graduate and enter the real world, your differences are what make you a fascinating friend for people...imagine how boring the world would be if everyone really was exactly alike. Another thing about school...fitting in seems like a huge deal, but a year or two after you've gotten out, you'll be lucky if you can remember the names of more than 20 people at the school...right now they're your whole world but they won't matter much at all once you don't see them every day.
