I've started an online community called The Ignored Board (http://www.theignoredboard.com), which is free to join and use, and am looking for ways to get it noticed on the Internet.
Because of the nature of the site and the target audience - it is a community for people who, for whatever reason, feel out of place in other communities - I've found it to be a little harder than usual. Message boards in general can be hard to promote, because some webmasters, admins etc. are very competitive.
At present I'm considering paid advertising, but what other methods can I use (and how to implement them)?
What are some effective ways of advertising a new online community?
there are actually some yahoo groups specifically to advertise other groups and websites. You may want to start there.
Reply:If you want to pay for advertising, I would suggest you to advertise on blogs as most blogs have subscribers and this will help to spread the word quickly. You can use the services of pay per post for paid reviews or myroomie.net/advertise.html for affordable CPM advertising.
If you do not want to pay for advertising, it's going to take a lot of your time and you will have to comment on other blogs, write in forums and always keep the link in your e-mail's signature to get more visitors to your community.
